Service Team in Bean Town (Written by Sara - Thanks Sara!)
This past Friday 7/25 the KS Services Team wrapped up a very productive 3-day working meeting hosted by MIT in Cambridge, Mass. Achievements include significant progress on modeling the remaining Release 1 services, the integration (a.k.a. hazing) of the Data Team members into the Services team, and closure on Search and Dictionary discussions in preparation for upcoming inter-team meetings. The Team also hosted a 90-minute session with folks from MIT's Information Services and Technology Team, including KS Board member Jerry Grochow. The inclement wet weather helped the team stay focussed on the tasks at hand in the meeting room throughout the week, but the rain cleared up by Friday afternoon to allow a tour of the campus -- including the controversial Stata Center designed by Frank Gehry.

Upcoming Departure
I'd like to express my gratitude to Wayne Shao. Wayne was instrumental in getting our Raj space converted and he provided support to the SS2012 Search committee. Wayne has been on a temporary appointment and we are trying to extend his appointment for another month. I am awaiting word on our request, but it is possible that Wayne's last day might be this week. I'm really hoping we can get another month so he can help the SS2012 Director get settled. Please join me thanking Wayne for his help these last months.
Reminders
a. We have a dynamic team ready to Wow the attendees of the ninth annual Campus Forum on Student Systems this Friday. James, Tomo, Rachelle Feldman (from the FAO office) and Johanna (in her first office duty since becoming a mother) will be at 11am. Don't forget to RSVP if you plan to attend: https://sis.berkeley.edu/forum/forum_signup
b. The UI team is meeting in Vancouver this week to discuss dictionary and search. We don't have any Berkeley reps on that team so we'll have to work extra hard get the essence of what they are up to. Rachel did drop in on them today just to keep them honest, so we do have a little window in.
Looking Ahead
a. Next week I'm on vacation (yeah!), and well be returning 8/11.
b. Next week is the last week before the App Design and User Experience teams descend on Berkeley. The teams will be meeting 8/11-13 in the two adjoining conference rooms on the first floor (Main + Display Area) so don't be alarmed by the extra foot traffic. Please help the App Design team to get out of the building! Introduce yourself to the new UX team member Kristina Batiste (see the news from 7/17).
c. Next week Johanna will be rejoining the Raj crew.
d. Next week the Functional Council will be blessing or getting close to blessing the Release 1 Scope document.
