2009 arrives, and an important year in the development of Kuali Student begins. The KS Steering Committee turned its attention to several important items, the Functional Council took at a look at specs, and the Kuali Foundation added support staff.

Functional Testing Plans
The Steering Committee discussed UMCP’s examination of providing a testing coordinator. In the meantime, interim Michelle Appel is helping to get the testing plan going with R1 continuing SMEs and the Functional Council. Berkeley is proceeding with identifying specific skill sets that might help identify testers. Check out the the Steering Committee agenda and the notes.
Reporting Architecture
The SC also discussed the KS Reporting Architecture, focusing on three deliverables: Reporting Architecture, Data Architecture, Tools and Technologies.
JIRA Usage to Expand
KS Team Leads are exploring methodology to make better use of JIRA, the issue tracking and project management open-source software system. Initial JIRA guidance is posted, but more direction can be expected as Team Leads coordinate with ongoing organization by Foundation staff.
Reviewing Functional Specs
Functional Council reviewed functional specs using Learning Result Scale as an example. This included a broad overview of the purpose of interpreting the user requirements into specifications for the development team. There was also a brief overview of the "Learning Result Scales” functional specifications. See the meeting minutes.

A reminder to team leads to review and update glossary terms. This is a useful for new members, and an important part of ensuring effective communications between teams. Check out the glossary.
Kuali Foundation Support
Farooq Sadiq has joined the Kuali Foundation as the Configuration Manager, and will work with Scott Shepherd and Rick Burnette to improve KS usability. Additionally, Scott Cooley has been appointed as the Kuali Member Liaison. In this role, Scott will be responsible for being a primary liaison to current and potential members of the Kuali community, including oversight of cross-project internal communications and extending our external outreach. Rice 1.0 Code Freeze
Effective January 14, a coding freeze takes effect for Rice 1.0. This will impact Kuali Student. Review the Technical items and Functional items that did not make the freeze.
