This morning JR and I viewed the proposed Kuali team space in the 'CNS' building at Shattuck and Dwight. If you've ever picked up a cell phone or been buzzed into the building you'll be familiar with the space, it's on the first floor just to the right of the front door.
It includes a carpeted area with three sections of cubicles in approx 860 sq ft. This area joins a counter and small reception area of approx 360 sq ft. The space is currently occupied by two people who handle the security of the front door and some land line phone drop off and pick up.
It seems most feasible to share the space with the current two occupants (while it is possible that CNS or IST may want to relocate these two work spaces there doesn't seem to be any existing plans to do so yet). In this shared scenario we would be using approx half of the 1200+ sq ft of the space. JR and I think it would be wise to delay any workstation reconfiguration until we get the team together and brainstorm the most effective use of the space. The door to the CNS warehouse which is currently accessible from this space should be moved to the hallway to expand usable space, other than that no major construction would be necessary.
Alternatively, we could push to occupy the whole space. This scenario would be more complicated and involve removing the front counter, finding space for the two receptionists, reconfiguring the front door access electronics and IST finding a lobby area for customers who
arrive with land line phone business.
BTW, there is a large conference room elsewhere on the first floor and a small storage room that might be convertible into a small meeting / video conference room. And there appear to be two polycom video conference units floating around the building.
Next steps include:
1) Getting a handle on what IST wants to to do with the space in the long-term, i.e. will the two receptionists be moving eventually anyway?
2) What would the rent be for each scenario.
3) Determining if the small storage room is available to be converted to a small conference room.
