1. Team Space (a top priority after the Vancouver workshop).
Thanks to Johanna and those gathering in the Vancouver airport waiting for a flight home, Shel was taken up on his offer to accept requests of "things the KS team needs". As a result, a possible KS team home base was located on the northwest corner of Dwight and Shattuck (in other words in the building the CNS folks occupy). Approx 0.7 miles away from Sproul Hall (see attached photo), this space apparently has space for 8-10 people, is available immediately, requires very little renovation and is free. OK, 3 out of 4 is not bad, actually rent might be around $60K. I will get a look at the space this week hopefully. I spoke with the campus real estate office and with our short term rental needs the likelihood of finding other space is bleak. I am pursuing RSSP space possibilities as well. In the mean time, Johanna's office has become the unofficial meeting place for the KS team. Thanks to Randy for attempting to secure a local a space angel. Thanks to LaVern Lazzereschi for her help is all things space related (see 3 below).
2. Functional Team Augmentation (a top priority after the Vancouver workshop)
Yu-Tin has agreed to travel to Maryland for the functional workshop Aug 20-24. Yu-Tin will be asked to share his technical business process mapping skills and will be assigned to the Admission team. I continue to have on my ToDo list the posting of a Business Analyst position. I hope to report progress next week while much of the team is away in Maryland. Alicia will return from vacation so I'm hoping to have her help me get it done. Thanks to Cathy Taruskin for producing a lead on a potential candidate for the Analyst position.
3. October Workshop (a takeaway from the Vancouver workshop)
We are moving ahead with plans to host the Oct workshop in Berkeley. Several locations have been investigated (both on and off campus). The Claremont might be a future possibility but no space in Oct. The DoubleTree in the Berkeley Marina would be great if we can get them to come down on their price and tomorrow I will see the Hilton on Powell street off 580, keep your fingers crossed. I am drafting plans for half day Monday, full days Tu-We-Th leaving all day Friday for a travel day for the East Coast folks.
4. KS Functional Steering Representatives (a takeaway from the Vancouver workshop)
Susie confirmed that she is stepping away from the Functional Steering Committee to focus on the KS Board. I will become the campus rep and Johanna will be the alternate.
5. Collaboration Tools
The functional team leads have started to experiment with Skype, Breeze and IM clients. This is probably old news for the technical folks but it's cutting edge stuff on this side. If you don't already have one, please setup a free Skype account. After a few meetings, I think if we get everyone a decent video cam we don't need to bother with the head sets. I was impressed with the Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision (~$90) used by Dan at UMD. I'll keep you posted.
6. Magic Draw Licenses
IST is moving ahead with a purchase of the Enterprise version of Magic Draw. The purchase will include 7 'floating' licenses. I made an emergency purchase of 1 'floating' standard license since the demo version wasn't letting Cathy and Ruth save their Maryland homework. I also found out that the Personal edition of Magic Draw does NOT support the BPM diagrams we are currently developing (bummer, since we might have to pluck down another $700 if the larger campus purchase doesn't come through soon). A big thank you to Cathy for her help in presenting at Maryland.
There's more but I'm already too verbose so just a few words about...
- I'm waiting for logo designs for a Cal version of the Kuali Student logo,
- Johanna and I met with Mara about Fluid (let's partner, partner),
- I'm trying to find out about Jabber IM accounts from Delta Kuali team (get your chat clients ready - see Pidgin)
- The 07-08 budget allocations are becoming clearer and the unplanned for expenses become larger (e.g. see #1).
- UC-wide Admissions and Enrollment Technology folks are having a 'gathering' in Oct and Johana and I (and maybe some others) will be representing Kuali.
- New students move in this weekend.
Question of the Week: How will their experience be altered by our work? (remember they graduate before 2012!)
Send me your feedback. You can also find this on the KS wiki at
