Levelator
Levelator is free software that adjusts the audio levels within a WAV or AIFF audio file for variations from one speaker to the next, for example. It's not a compressor, normalizer or limiter although it contains all three.
The problem with Skype recordings is the local voice it much louder than the remote voices. To solve this problem the recording will have to be leveled and shrunk as follows:
1. Use Pamela Call Recorder record a call to an mp3 file.
2. Open the recorded mp3 file with Audacity.
3. 'Export as WAV...' file in Audacity.
4. Open Levelator.
5. Drag WAV file from #3 onto Levelator, which will create another WAV file.
6. Open then new output.wav file in #5 with Audacity
7. Set the MP3 Export in Audacity to 16 bit:
Edit-Preferences (Ctrl+P)-File Format Tab-MP3 Export Setup-Bit rate=16
8. 'Export as MP3...'
The 15 minute test recording went through the following transformations:
3.5mb - Pamela MP3 recording
77.5mb - Audacity Export to WAV
77.5mb - Levelator smoothed out version
1.7mb - Audacity Export as MP3 (16bit)
