Stumbled upon my first video podcast which happened to talk about Free Photoshop Alternatives. I downloaded Paint.net and it did what I was looking for, i.e. magic wand removal of the white background/border around an icon and then make it transparent. I didn't try Gimp which was also mentioned, but did check out the web photo editor called FotoFlexer which may come in handy for cropping photos.
