App Design Team Shortage
App Design team needs 4 additional business analysts. Development plans adjusted to compensate, but expect delays in producing design specifications. New business analyst resources is a top project priority.
Release 1 Development Planning
Team leads are weighing resource constraints and delayed completion of application design specifications to craft a high level development plan for R1 services and application components. Coordinated delivery of team work products is essential to keeping development teams busy.
Initial Release 1 Functional Spec Complete
App Design team's initial functional spec is complete and a good base for defining the methodology and template for future functional specs. Further refinements may be necessary as design and development proceeds.
Use Case Transitioning to R2
7 of 9 R1 use case packages (mélanges) complete, remainder expected by end of month. R2 work begins Oct 27 at Maryland workshop. UX resources will start contextual inquiries and developing R2 personas. Contacts with R1 teams will be preserved. Continuity between R1 and R2 crucial and will stretch available resources.
Service Team Update
8 of 16 R1 service contracts at version 0.1 or better, remainder expected by Nov 7. Service implementation specs ahead of schedule to accommodate the development team plans. Tremendous amount of 'invisible' methodology work and work on infrastructure services has been completed.
Development Infrastructure
Dictionary, Search, Rules, Identity (KIM), Workflow (KEW), and Organization (KOM) services expected to be sufficiently developed to allow development on LUM services to proceed. KIM expected to fully support KS needs by Q2 2009. Creation of deployment lab to test performance, loose coupling of services, ease of installation (quality of install scripts), and accessibility making good progress.
Risks & Mitigation Strategies
a. Taking longer for R1 due to learning curve and delays in finding critical resources
- Manage scope at the detail level
- Consider contracting BA resources
b. Development activities increasingly complex with many integration points and team dependencies.
- Reinforce importance and value of status reporting and project plans.
- Hire a Project Control Manager to work with the team leads and manage the integrated project plan.
c. Alignment between KS middleware and Rice products
- Work with KF and Kuali projects on Tech Roadmap Cmte and Application Roadmap Cmte to develop strategic roadmap for RICE
