What’s in a Name

There’s something special about a product with a unique and impactful moniker. It sticks in your mind and lingers on your tongue. It is generally safe to say the “Release 1” or “R1” is not such a name. Moreover, it has no value outside of the project team. So, we want to hear from you.

As such we are reaching out to project members to stir the creative juices. David Scronce of Berkeley offers a little inspiration – and barrows a page from “Made to Stick” – recommending project members think about SUCCESS: Simple, Unexpected, Credible, Concrete, Emotionally appealing, and Story … tells a Story.

To participate, please go to the What is in a Name – R1 page on the KS wiki and add your recommendations in the comments section. At this stage, we are collecting all ideas, so don’t be shy. The most effective names will be discussed at the next SC/FC meeting.

Rice Charter Revision

The Kuali Technology Roadmap Committee continues its work revising the Rice charter to ensure that the document continues to serve the project’s vision, scope, objectives and overall approach.

It also serves as an the agreement between the Kuali Foundation and Kuali Projects, so the ramifications on Kuali Student are noteworthy. Review the draft Rice Charter and comments.

All A-Twitter  Kuali Student is now on Twitter

Finally Twitter has something to say: Kuali Student has joined the Twittering world.

To become a follower, simply log on to your Twitter account (or register for one) after following the link to KS on Twitter.

KS Online at UW

The University of Washington took Kuali Student to its Web site earlier this month, adding a KS section to its Office of Information Management Web pages.

Besides providing all of the pertinent KS information, the UW KS Web pages effectively communicates UW’s current situation and rationale for participating in the KS project. Please check it out!

USC Approves KS Funds

The University of Southern California (USC) has approved a $5 million investment in Kuali Student with immediate cash contributions of $250,000 in Year 2 of the project. In July 2009, USC support will ramp up further with details of the forms of contributions not yet finalized.

NPS Eager to Contribute

Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) continues negotiations with San Joaquin Delta, and the parties are nearing finalization of the Foundations agreements. NPS representatives say they are eager to move forward with contributions.

CMU Addresses Immediate Needs, Prepares for R1

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is working on a student billing and account system to address immediate needs, while continuing to look at implementation issues associated with R1. CMU plans to implement R1 as an early adopter.

FSU Conducts IT Review

Florida State University (FSU) is using an external company to review the university’s IT project plans and strategy, including plans for Kuali Student, over the next three to four months. The review is expected to provide more governance and transparency at FSU, and is not an expression of dissatisfaction with Kuali Student.

Create-a-Course Test Results

In case you haven’t seen them the Create-a-Course Rules usability test results can be found at on the KS wiki.

Harvard Sees the KS Way

According to The Harvard Crimson, Harvard is moving toward Web-only editions of its course catalog, handbooks. What a great idea!

The Crimson declares: “The initiative will not only shave costs and eliminate waste in a time of financial duress but will offer a flexibility unseen in printed materials like the course catalog…”
