KS vs. KRU
There have been some discussions over what exactly is Kuali Reference University (KRU) and how KRU relates to Kuali Student. During an all-hands delivery team meeting this week, project manager Rajiv Kaushik provided some valuable reinforcement on what exactly KRU is and what it is not.
Kuali Student is production ready code which can configured for any institution. This includes:
- UI Tool-Box:
- A rich User Interaction Model (UIM): library of layouts, fields, widgets , behaviors
- Google Web Toolkit (GWT) User Interaction (UI) Framework to assemble screens from available UIM components
- GWT UI Framework to create custom UIM components
- Application Objects:
- Library of specific objects to wrap calls to abstract services (note: this layer is currently being re-architected for better modularity)
- Non-Configured Service Implementations
- Implementations of Service Contracts
- Consume Data Dictionary which defines fields, validations and constraint
As a support to Kuali Student, KRU is an example configuration to meet common needs of institutions. This sample configuration is delivered through:
- Assembled screens based on a lot of business requirements
- Configured application objects to provide Learning Units out-of-the-box : Course, Program, Project and Experiential Learning
- Configured services to provide Learning Units out-of-the-box: Course, Program, Project and Experiential Learning
- A populated Data Dictionary for KRU fields, validations and constraints
As we move closer to Release 1, keep in mind the role of KRU and educate others about how it serves Kuali Student.
Expectations of Delivery Team Members
Also at the Delivery Team meeting, there was a review of the Expectations of Delivery Team Members, including Development Leads, Developers and Business Analysts. The expectations provide a more defined scope for team members as it applies to the current project status and methodology.
These expectations compliment that existing Roles and Responsibilities for project team members.
Kuali Days VIII Status

Seeking Authors for KS Reporter Blog
The Kuali Student Reporter, the blog for external audiences, continues to grow and evolve as we move closer to Release 1. Currently, we are looking to expand the blog authors to provide a diversity of voices to represent the true nature of Kuali Student. Are you interested becoming a blog author with the Reporter? It will require only one or two post a months, but can in no way interfere with other project responsibilities. If still interested, contact Scott Shepherd.
